Cheyenne Mountain State Park & Rocky Mountain National Park

Hi Everyone! DH and I are planning our Sept. 2017 vacation. Have a few questions about our plans. We plan on first going to Cheyenne Mountain State Park for 6 nights. Is that too long at that park? We plan on visiting attraction in Colorado Springs and feel this would be a good place to stay. Then on to RMNP, hopefully Moraine campground for 6 nights. We love riding our bikes and moderate trails for hiking. Any comments would be appreciated. We camped at Gros Ventre campground in Grand Teton National Park last year non electric for 10 days and could of stayed another 10! We just didn't know if we should stay longer at RMNP. Thanks Tara
  • We stayed at Cheyenne Mt SP last summer. Very nice park. We didn't ride bikes very far. It is hilly. There is a lot of wild life in the campground. The view is beautiful and there is a lot to do in the area. We ate lunch at Mountain Shadows Restaurant in Old Colorado City (2223 Colorado Ave, Co. Springs)and the food and service was great! It is a locals kind of place. Very dog friendly patio area, that is why we stopped.

  • For both locations, you'll definitely need reservations 6 months up. I've already booked dates at Moraine Park, and did so early on the day that the window opened for that date. And even doing this, I still was not able to get my first choice...or 2nd choice. September and October are still very popular for Moraine Park, as Glacier Basin usually closes right after Labor Day, so it's the only one open in that area, and the elk will be rutting...generates a LOT of traffic there.

6 nights in Rocky? For some, too many. For others, not enough. Depends on what you want to do, besides going up on Trail Ridge Rd.

There has been an uptick in the number of bike riders up there, and while some of us are tolerant, most tourists are not. There's been some dangerous incidents with bike riders, both going up and coming down. Going up, the riders are going very slow, and as pointed out, there's no bike lane, so you're in traffic. Tourists don't like that. They crowd the bike riders and I've seen some passed very close to the rider. Going down, the bike riders are going very fast...sometimes way too fast to stop safely if needed, and there are a lot of blind curves. And don't forget you'll be at elevation up on Trail Ridge, between 10000 and 12000 feet. Oxygen depletion is rapid. My suggestion -- don't even try to bike ride on the main roads in Rocky. Bikes are not permitted on most of the trails in Rocky. There are plenty of other things to do in Estes, and there are bike trails all over town and in the valley.

And there's LOTS of hiking, on both sides of the park. Shorter hikes are mainly on the east side. Longer and sometimes more scenic hikes are on the west side. Of note on the west side are the Grand Ditch and the hike to Lulu City, following the headwaters of the Colorado River. Each of these could be a day hike, depending on how adventurous and experienced you are.

Also on the west side, Grand Lake is a must see/do. It's a good day trip over there, good places to eat in town, and most of the activities around the lake are still going on in September. Plus there's some really good hikes that are short and scenic near the downtown area.

The same holds true for Cheyenne Mountain S.P. It is very popular most of the year.
  • Cheyenne Mountain is a great park with some amazing views. Some of the lower tier of sites had steep entries that made it hard to avoid scraping a bumper with my 30ft FW.

While the trail system looked first rate "no dogs" meant I didn't explore it. If you don't have a four legged hiking partner I think you'll be pleased.
  • 1 year ago we stayed at Cheyenne Mountain State Park and loved it. There's a lot to do in the area. Although we didn't stay in RMNP, we did visit it. We actually stayed at Cherry Creek State park in Aurora. Lot's to do in RMNP also, especially if you like to hike.

  • Agree with 2gypsies - any bike riding in Rocky will provide you with just dirty looks at best. Roads are - unless massive change as I have not been there for three years - two lane with no bike lane. Narrow shoulders and, in many cases, dropoffs with no guardrail. All the years I lived in Estes and spent a lot of time in the Park I saw very few bicycle riders.
  • I don't think you'd be doing much bike riding in Rocky Mtn. NP. . . unless you like to bike with traffic on hills... steep hills. :)

Six nights in Rocky would be great! Enjoy.
