Chippokes Plantation State Park

We plan to stay at Chippokes between Christmas and New Years. We will come in on a Sunday.Check in is 4pm.They do say if your site is available you can check in early. We plan to leave PA at 8am and arrive about 1pm.If our campsite is not available,is there room for us to park and hang out until 4pm? Also,we will come in on I64. What is the best route to take to the campground.

  • We loved being there late summer and like you, were confused about the 4 pm check in. We got there at 3 and they told us to come anytime and we could check in if there was no one in our site. If there were people in our site, we could park at the Visitor Center.

We think the system of most State Parks are pretty confusing and no one to call to get confirmation. So go as early as you want and check in. Happy Thanksgiving.
  • I tried to make a reservation today and was told they close the first weekend in December. I was told only 3 Virginia state park campgrounds are open all year.Hungry Mother,Douthot and Shenadoah River. So we choose the later. Not where we wanted to be but it is closer to home. We'll have to do Chippokes some other time. Thanks for the help.
  • You are going to be way west if you follow 81 to 64 before turning east. Maybe come over on US17 to 95 at Fredericksburg? I think US15 is involved in there somewhere too. A great park, you will enjoy it.
  • the "B" section sites are much nicer than "A" and they are more level and can accommodate larger rv's. The pull throughs are very nice as well.
  • They have a pilot program where there are a few sites that are reserveable. We will never take 95 again which is why we are coming down I81 then I 64.
  • You shouldn't have any problem getting on a site.

I agree with the recommendation to take 295 to 10.
  • One of our favorite campgrounds. Unless there has been a change, you can reserve in either campground A or B, but not a specific site. Once you arrive, just pick any spot in either A or B, depending on which one (A or B) you reserved.

WRT route, don't use 64. If you are coming down 95 or 295, get on VA 10 through Hopewell to Surrey.

The free ferry (Scotland Jamestown) is a fun way and quickest to Williamsburg.
