Royal Gorge park is recovering from a fire last fall and will be closed for a large part of the summer, then opening with weekend only hours. I'd check their website or call before making the one hour trip from Colorado Springs to Canon City.
We are planning a trip to Colorado Springs and some of our planned to do's are:
-Garden of the Gods
-Pikes Peak
-Manitou Cliff Dwellings
-Helen Hunt Falls (since Seven Falls is closed due to flooding last year)
-Peterson AFB Air & Space Museum (check their website, you need 24-hour ahead clearance and some paperwork upon arrival)
-Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument
-a possible visit to the Colorado Wolf & Wildlife Center since daughter is nuts about wolves (reservations required)
-Cheyenne Mountain Zoo where you can feed the giraffes
If you have a toad and make the trip to Canon City you could do one of the scenic drives back, the one we were going to do is Phantom Canyon Road, there are two others to choose from. You can see the options on your map and google for more info.
Also in Colorado Springs is the Air Force Academy.
And, could you work in a stop at Rocky Mountain National Park? If you're coming from the north you could easily stop there on the way to Colorado Springs. It would be a shame to be in the area and miss it.
