Colorado Help Please

We will have about 7 days to spend in Colorado before moving on to St. George, Utah. We generally avoid bigger cities so have decided to avoid Denver but maybe head south to Colorado Springs and from there to Gunnison area. After that, north to Grand Jct. to pick up I-70 - West to I-15 and South to St. George. We will be doing a caravan so will be goring to Durango, Cortez and Moab/Arches so want to avoid those places to start with.

My questions: what are your favorite things to see/do/stay around Colorado Springs. Also Gunnison. Are there other places we should try and get to or go instead. We will be traveling in late August so will getting places to camp be a problem. We have a 24 ft. unit so have more flexibility than large RV's.

Is Route 50 from Pueblo to Grand Jct. RV friendly?

This will be our first time in this area. We will not be bringing our bicycles and doing long hikes is not feasible either - scenery and interesting towns will be our focus.

We are open to any advice or suggestions you can provide.
  • We will be staying in Cheyenne Mtn state park for the first time in July. Can't wait. I'd support seeing Pikes Peak, Cripple Creek, Royal Gorge.
  • We have been to all of those places. Our favorite is the KOA in Ouray. Not your normal KOA. It is a nice little campground in the woods at the base of a mountain. You can rent a Jeep right there in the campground and hit some of the off road trails. Ouray is a nice small town with some great places to eat. We have spent our last 8 vacations in Colorado. We usually compare them to Ouray and say we should have went to Ouray. Now we do, we just go to Ouray and enjoy the mountains and cool weather.

Hwy 50 is a good road. We have ran it the length of the state in our MH with Jeep in tow. Like the other poster said, there are some long pulls, you are in the Rocky Mountains.
  • OK, here are my thoughts - having lived in CO and been to many places you mention.

I would make reservations and start looking now. Will be busy.

CO Springs. Cheyenne Mtn SP is the place to stay. In that you have a toad you will want to drive up to top of Pikes Peak. Also see Garden of the Gods.

Route 50 will be fine. Some grades, of course; you are in the mountains. :-)

Not much in Gunnison itself and don't know where to stay as never stayed there. So west to Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Can stay - as we do - at the KOA in Montrose.

Also rather than Gunnison go up to Buena Vista. Great area. Get to St. Elmo.

    Enjoy - great area.
  • Black Canyon of the Gunderson, Royal Gorge, Rocky Mountain National Park, Great Sand Dunes, Alligator Ranch near Sand Dunes. Pikes Peak either drive the road or take the Cog Railway.
These will keep you busy for sometime!
