Comments on Southern California RV Parks

We decided to get out of Colorado for Christmas and visit family and friends in Southern California. We stayed at two RV parks.

Newport Dunes RV Resort in Newport Beach was huge a disappointment! Many showers lacked hot water! The rest rooms had no soap in the dispensers to wash hands. The doggie poop bag dispensers were empty. The staff was less than cordial. This facility lacks management and supervision. I don't recommend using the on-line reservation system. That system seems to be out-of-sync with actual site availability. Our site was one of the least desirable and numerous superior sites sat empty for our entire stay. Maybe they don't like RVers with pets! If guests come to visit, they need a pass to get in and are charged if they park for more than one hour! Oh yeah, being under the flight path for John Wayne Airport is less than relaxing!

Mission Bay RV Resort in San Diego was terrific! Well managed and everything met our expectations. Great location and friendly staff. Great place for RVers with dogs. Lengthy walking trails along the bay and outstanding sunsets, The only negative was the lack of a convenience store in the park. Bay view sites are really on the water!
  • Go Here and post your comments. Many of us use that site for checking parks prior to making reservations.
  • It's hard to compare a SoCal RV site with Durango. I fondly remember our three trips to Durango and hope to be there again after the FMCA Mountain area Rally. It's been years since our last trip to Newport Dunes, we used to go all the time, with the kids, the scout troops, and with friends. In the summer it is almost impossible to get reservations as it books 2 years in advance. I do remember there have been a few attempts to sell the park for it's land value and build hotels, these attempts failed because of land-use coastline use regulations. Hope this is not raising an ugly head again.
Mission Bay RV Resort is indeed a great park.
In the end, SoCal has expensive beach resorts with limited access and long waiting lists. Durango has the mountains the rivers the lakes Indian ruins mining towns clear skies with stars at night and crisp clean air. I'm heading your way.
    Happy Trails.
  • I bet you were pleased with what you got for what you PAID at the Dunes....pretty pricey place.....:E...if you were there at Christmas, did you at least get to see the boat parade.???.......Dennis
