It's hard to compare a SoCal RV site with Durango. I fondly remember our three trips to Durango and hope to be there again after the FMCA Mountain area Rally. It's been years since our last trip to Newport Dunes, we used to go all the time, with the kids, the scout troops, and with friends. In the summer it is almost impossible to get reservations as it books 2 years in advance. I do remember there have been a few attempts to sell the park for it's land value and build hotels, these attempts failed because of land-use coastline use regulations. Hope this is not raising an ugly head again.
Mission Bay RV Resort is indeed a great park.
In the end, SoCal has expensive beach resorts with limited access and long waiting lists. Durango has the mountains the rivers the lakes Indian ruins mining towns clear skies with stars at night and crisp clean air. I'm heading your way.
Happy Trails.
