Conditons heading south after Christmas

We are planning to head to Florida from Michigan (I-65) within a few days after Christmas....departure date will be weather dependent.

I was wondering what accomdations along the way are like at that time?

Are the RV parks near the highway in Kentucky and Alabama full?

Are the rest areas packed full of overnighting RVer's?

Do we need to make reservations for stops along the way or can we safely wing it?

People have told me of their experiences coming north the first of April (packed rest areas, etc.) and I was wondering if conditions are similar around the first of the year when heading south?

  • We take I-65 south to Florida in mid December. We always stay at c.g.'s and have never had a problem getting a site - usually only a couple of other rv's. There are several c.g.s in Kentucky that are open and most in Alabama are available. There is also a park just north of Nashville at Goodlettsville that is open year round and only about 2 miles off the highway. This is the only park that I am aware of that is often full in the spring with Snowbirds going north. Best to make a reservation.

We don't do rest areas so I have no knowledge of their availability.
  • You won't have any problem finding open sites along the way since none of the RV parks will be anywhere NEAR full, but you MAY have a problem finding RV parks that are open. Many close for the winter, and many of the ones that stay open have the water turned off, and only offer electricity. Go to RVparkreviews.com, pick the general area that you want to spend your first night in, and search for parks close by. Then, check the website or call them to make sure they will be open. Once you get to Alabama, you should have no problem.
The reason the parks are full in April is because, besides returning Snowbirds, you also have people going to or coming from spring break trips, Easter weekend trips, etc., so you're sharing the sites with many more people coming back than you would going down. Also, most Snowbirds have already been "down south" for two months by the time Christmas comes around.
  • Hi,

I've driven south in January from Saskatchewan to Florida. Accommodations were two casino rv parks (no water, just power). As I went farther south more and more places were open.

When I reached more moderate temperatures I boondocked.
