Electric meters are pretty robust. Seldom, if ever, does one fail. If it is one of the multiple dial types, they are easy to misread. Just go read it now and see if you are using around the same amount daily as you did in either of the two months in question. It is entirely possible they misread the meter causing January to be very high (or December to be very low, which would be in your favor).
Depending upon where you are, $150.00 isn't a ridiculous amount for a month, especially if you are needing heat.
