Curt Gowdy State Park near Cheyenne, WY

We'll be out West late August/September and will want to take some time in Cheyenne on our way back, so was thinking of staying at Curt Gowdy SP. I have a 37' Georgetown and want to be sure that the campground can accommodate us. I've been looking at the website, but it's not real clear which loops could accommodate us, and also which looks take reservations. Can anyone help?

Thanks.

  • Nearby Vedauwoo can be a backup plan should you stay another day or get there a day before your reservation. It's popular and seems to fill up quick FCFS I believe. I did an overnight there on my return trip last summer and it was a pleasant surprise. Rather than leave early the next morning I took the dirt bike out for a spin on area roads. What a beautiful morning it was. I didn't even know about the Ames Monument. Now I do...:)
  • Thanks everyone for your feedback. I am going to make reservations in June for our stay in August. My understanding is that reservations are limited to 90-days prior to your arrival date.

It can in some sites. Most are a bit rough depending on rain and erosion. We have a similar size RV and fit. Best bet is to call the park and have them give you the best site options. You can see the park here Curt Gowdy State Park
  • We stayed there a couple of years ago on our way back from the Tetons. They had some group coming in and some nice sites were already spoken for, but we ended up with a nice site right next to the lake just a short distance from the boat ramp. It was a bit difficult getting into the spot only because we had to back down a small hill with a couple of turns in it.

The camping sites on the south end of the lake looked pretty small and difficult to get into. Sites up closer to the ranger station were easier to get into.

    Not far to Cheyenne.
  • The link Old Biscuit gave is valuable.

I camped there several years back for a long overnight. We were very pleased with the site, the staff, and the location. One tip: we drove past the entrance twice before we finally saw the sign. Be on your toes when you're looking for the entrance driveway.
