custer state park

We are planning a trip in the middle of July going to Custer State park never been there we are wanting to stay in the State park which campground do you recommend we have a 28ft travel trailer. Also looking for suggestions on places to see and things to do. Traveling with kids ages 8 and 12.
  • Thanks for all of your replies now just checking availability for the week of the 4th or week of the 12th in July I am wondering if the week of the 4th will be to busy. Also looking to do some hiking and horseback riding any must see trails.
  • Make reservations NOW. Game Lodge is good. The dump station is there.
Legion Lake is nice, but much smaller.
All the campgrounds in the state park are nice, but Sylvan Lake and Bluebell are a bit out of the way, and Stockade Lake South is, too... IMO. But they're all pretty. Pull up the web site for Custer State Park and it will give you campground maps, etc. You are in for a real treat.
  • I can't answer your question about the RV parks IN the state park, but I can tell you that we stayed in Custer's Gulch RV Park which is a private park and which we found to be very convenient to the state park, the wildlife loop, Iron Mountain Road, Mt. Rushmore, and Needles Highway.

This is just an alternate possibility to actually being in the state park. I am simply not familiar with the camping inside the park.
  • sylvan lake campground if you can still get reservations.
just search custer park, rushmore and crazy horse and you will have plenty of reading
  • I recommend Jewel Cave, the kids will love it!

Wear pants because it's cold down there, also comfortable walking shoes.
