Days for Yosemite in Oct?

We are seniors who would be interested in a couple of shorter trails and seeing the loop to Yosemite Village. What are we missing? I'm afraid it will be cold... Snow? How many days should we consider. We will likely stay at Midpones. Thanks!
  • We've made 54 trips up there from LA since 2003. Here's a link to the Yosemite Guide, the handout that everyone gets going into the park. We've never encounter snow until late November or early December. Lots of trails like Mirror Lake loop or Vernal Falls may be for you. We always spend at least 3 days, great shuttle bus service, just park in day parking and shuttle will take you everywhere.
What's Midpones where you are staying?

  • We are thinking the Mariposa KOA. Good to hear we will be able to see more than we thought without snow!
  • If you can get a spot in the park and don't mind dry camping, then do it. It will save you time and money. You are going to have a blast in Yosemite. It's, IMHO, one of the easiest NP's to see thanks to a wonderful bus system and a centrally located valley with attractions very close to one another compared to other parks. Snow would be rare in October in the Valley at 4000 feet of elevation but in the high country it is possible at 8000ft but you won't likely be up there in October if there is snow unless you visit the ski resort.

If you must stay outside the park, the Mariposa KOA is nice but I prefer Indian Flat in El Portal. It is the closest RV park to the entrance of Yosemite.
  • October is a great time to visit the park. I have always visited at the end of October. The only downfall is that you won't see as much water from the waterfalls as you do in the spring/summer but you see all of the fall colors. The temps may be cool at night and early morning but it still warms up during the day. We camped at Indian Flat (private) campground in El Portal because it is fairly close to the south gate. The park is not fancy and is all dirt but it is convenient. Yosemite is always busy but not as much as in the summer. There are plenty of short hikes. Also it is a great place to ride a bicycle if you have them. Enjoy your trip.

Agree late Sept and Oct are perfect times to visit.
Snow would be unusual during that time.
