Dead Horse State Park - Utah (Moab Area)

We are looking to plan a trip to the Moab area next May/June. As I was looking at possible campgrounds, I came across this state park...Anyone familiar with it? I also noticed that you can't make reservations but 4 months out...what are my chances?

Thanks!

  • I've found that dump stations usually charge a fee unless you are staying at their CG. I honestly don't remember if the dump station at DHP SP charges a fee, as we usually have the water system winterized by the time we go there in November. When we do stay in the Moab area (mostly BLM CG's), we take a couple of five gallon water jugs and top our tank off every day or two. There is a new parking area at the junction of UT 128 and US 191. I think I saw water spigots there this spring, but construction was just finishing up. Maybe someone else can comment on water availability there.

As for temps, we have hit some really high temps around 100 by the end of May, but the average then is closer to 90 degrees. Still hot, but "it's a dry heat". ;) Because it's the desert, it usually cools off nicely in the evening, say mid-50's that time of year. If it's a hot day, do your hiking early, find some shade or water mid-day (raft trip?), then continue your explorations in the late afternoon.
  • Stayed there a few ago. Great Campground. Water is scarce so make sure your tanks are full before going there. Campground has a shelter at each site with an electricity for the light in the shelter. At the end of the road is a great overlook to the valley below.
  • Outstanding! I saw a link that referred to dump/fill stations that charged a fee! Never seen that before. So we will need to fill our tank in Moab? about an hour away? will it be above 100 yet in the end of May/first of June?
  • We have stayed there several times, but mostly over the Thanksgiving week when visitation is low. I imagine you need to try to get your reservation exactly four months out to have luck, as it is a popular place and you are going at a popular time. Try to start your reservation on a weekday and reserve out from there. I think there are four sites that are first come, first served, but that would be a real gamble and a long drive from town just to find out if there is one.

There are great views from the park and you have quick access to Island in the Sky portion of Canyonlands NP, but it is almost an hour into Moab from the park. Similar times to many other sites such as Arches.

If you get a site bring your own water, as they truck the water in all the way from Moab.

If you like mountain biking, Moab is a great place to go. The trails at Dead Horse Point SP are among the easier and you can ride right from your campsite. PM me if you want more info on biking trails in the area. We typically spend 2-3 weeks a year in the Moab area.
