Decorah, Iowa

Decorah, Iowa - will visit the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum.

Stopping for 2 nights on our way out west - any campground recommendations?
  • Thanks for the info - we will be arriving on Tuesday evening and leave on Thursday morning so we should be able to find room at Pulpit Rock CG.
  • We just spent last weekend at Pulpit Rock CG. Clean, nice, just stay off the grass. Ha ha ha ha there's signs all over stating that, apparently they don't want you on the grass.

We went to see the eagles and picnic with friends, had a very nice time. The campground fills up fast on Fridays I'm told and it was full by 7:00 PM Friday when we were there, mass evacuation Sunday morning though. We pulled out Monday morning with nobody around. Get there early in the day if it's close to the weekend other wise during the week it's fairly easy to get in. They have WIFI there but it's not the greatest.

  • Don't forget to go see the eagles nest at the Fish Hatchery and visit Seed Savers. You can buy a Quality Chick shirt at the Chicken Hatchery downtown and shop at Vanbernia. You got to make sure you get a Nisse for your camper also. You're welcome to our yard if you think you can make it work. You look a little bit bigger then our pip squeak.
  • The city campground is nice but sometimes full on weekends but right on the bike trail, trout stream and The Upper Iowa. Be sure to visit Dunning Springs and you can see where I live. We're the house with the Scamp and the free roaming chickens. There is also Ice Cave just up the road. You can get ice cream at the Whippy Dip.
  • Decorah is north from me by about 2 hours. I haven't camped up in that area. There is Pulpit Rock Campground right in Decorah - see here.

If you're looking at state parks, click here.

Yellow River State Forest Campground is closed. If you don't mind commuting back and forth to Decorah, Pikes Peak State Park and Backbone State Park look pretty nice.
