Des Moines , Iowa recommendations?

Can't help on Des Moines but if you go a little further to the Davenport area I stay at one on the North side of town just off I-80 at 130 about exit 290 or so?

Thanks. I think you are talking about Interstate RV park. Good suggestion but i was looking for something Des Moines or west of it.

The park near the aviation museum is lovely, if it is open.

What is your route?

If they're open (they may close seasonally), the West Des Moines KOA in Adel is quite decent. Lots of pullthru sites, and there have always been larger rigs there when we've stayed. Clean facilities. A little off the interstate - not quite a mile - so no road noise, but still convenient for traveling I-80.

We are actually heading west from Chicago back to Colorado Springs. We are looking for something about 6 hrs west of Chicago on I-80. We called both the Newton and West Des Moines KOA and they are both closed until April 1.

There is a small Iowa State Park named Walnut Woods that is located near West Des Moines. There are only 15 sites, but most of them are full hookup and were recently redone. The state park sites are open year round and some sites can be reserved. It would take you south of I-80 a little ways, but can take Hwy 5/69 bypass which is 4 lane to get there.

There is a park in Altoona, just N. of I-80 and I-35 first exit and to the east.
There may be a problem, that some parks in that area don't open till April 1.

Adventure Land Amusement Park has a nice campground just off I80.

Griff's Valley View RV Park exit 142 about 5 miles from I-80.
Adventureland is also open year round but Griff's gets better reviews.
