After just showing up at a SP CG in the fall with a new-to-us RV, only to find there were no sites available, we learned to make reservations. To each his own, but basically for weekend & holiday camping, reservations are often needed, and those who just show up may miss out.
If you really don't like making reservations, then choose a less popular CG and camp on weekdays. :)
