I dislike having to make reservations. But for many locations and times they are necessary. Sometimes to get sites near friends or not to have to move frequently through a stay. I've had some great stops that wouldn't have been as great without the reservation.
En route in non resort country I usually travel without reservations, and stop fairly early in the afternoon.
