Drinking Water

We just use our holding tank water but with rules. All water that goes in is filtered thru a standard water filter. Any water that goes in the mouth is filtered thru a pur countertop pitcher using 3m filters. No problems as of yet.

I recommended using a filter every time you fill your RV's fresh water tank. We use an in-line filter that screws right onto the hose I use for filling the fresh water tank. By the way, always use only a potable water hose for filling of your RV's fresh water tank.

Also, never fill your fresh water tank from the water pipe source at a dump station. Many dump station areas are posted with a sign implying that the water there is not to be used for drinking (i.e. "non-potable water") - but some dump station areas don't post one way or the other - so I choose to not trust any dump station's water hose for filling of our RV's fresh water tank.

We also have a built-in filter in our RV's kitchen sink faucet inlet pipe. Even with all these precautions, for drinking water we always bring along bottled water for drinking. We never drink directly the water from our fresh water tank. We never buy "purifed " bottled water either - only bottled water sourced from a spring.

Before each trip I empty the RV's fresh water tank and completely refill it. Before the refill, I pour about 6 oz. of chlorine (we have a 39 gallon fresh water tank) into the end of the filling hose just before screwing the hose onto the house water faucet. This is enough chlorine to sanitize the RV's 39 gallon tank and fresh water system without causing a chlorine smell from the faucets or shower head.

Our RV's fresh water tank inlet has a locking cover over it, as an added precaution.

Here is your place to shop for your filters. This gentlemen knows his stuff and is very helpful if you give him a call. We get our filters from him. We have one on the water coming into the tank and one at the kitchen faucet to remove taste.

We boondocked a lot and got our water from various sources. We fill the tank and drink and cook from the tank water. With filters we had no concerns.

Hauling water get old and buying it...some comes from not so good sources anyway. All they do is filter it, as you can easily do.

It seems to me that barring Flint Michigan, which was a well known problem, the overwhelming majority of Americans are not being poisoned or sickened by their water supplies, which campgrounds and RV parks share.

So If you don't feel it necessary to have an inline filter at your house then why have one on the road? It seems odd to me to worry about the drinking water where people are living and carrying on their lives and drinking the water with no problems.

America does have some of the worlds cleanest water and highest standards. Trust me Iv'e lived in Egypt and SE Asia and know dirty water systems.

We worry way too much about stuff like this. And that is a function of our over-obsessive concern with all things bacterial. Most of which are actually either good for us or at least not harmful.

How DID I EVER live to be this age without sani-wipes to clean the grocery-cart handle and RV water filters?

I use the empty bottles we save and refill them with park water. They are put in the refrigerator so we have cold water to drink.

We filter all the water that goes into the tank. If we're refilling when out in the desert we filter the water before the jugs. Then we use the onboard water for everything.

Bottled water does not as far as I know have any strict standards plus those plastic bottles are a huge environmental mess.

Berkey is a great system but I think the filter you're using now is better than the one you want, FWIW.

This is not the one I have but if I had it to do over I'd use this one, way better filtration while maintaining a good flow rate.

We have never worried about the water in the Southwest. Our well for our home has great quality water but fair taste so we use bottled water for drinking. We take bottled water out of habit when traveling in the MH but never fear drinking from our on-board tank filled with local water.

We do the same (take bottle water & purchase more when gone) when we go to Mexico but treat the local tap water with bleach when filling the on-board tank. Have never had a problem.
