- cbsurfmomExplorerFYI Kebler pass is usually closes by the first week in October due to snow. Keep that in mind as you're out and about. Definitely due the Scenic By Way and check out the Black Canyon in Crawford, CO. Also, it's hunting season so wear your orange out in the woods.
- EsoxLuciusExplorerLake Irwin campground closes October 1st.
- sherpaxcExplorerYou could make lake Irwin no problem. I was there this summer with 2 wheel drive. Heck, cars drive it everyday. That time of year would be amazing if they are still open.

The Motor Vehicle Use Maps in conjunction with the Dispersed Camping Guidelines will help one find boondocking spots in the Grand Mesa Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forest. See the notes on Dispersed Camping on the MVUM.
Lake Irwin had all kinds of rigs in it when I was there, and I don't remember getting there was much of a problem with steep grades or tight switchbacks even on 730. And coming out 12 from Crested Butte to Lake Irwin should not be a problem for a 2WD truck pulling a 24 foot toy hauler. - rerodExplorerThanks everyone.. I'm not sure my 2wd and the 24'er will allow me to access Lake Irwin or the like.
I talked to USNF and she told me no dry camping permitted between Gunnison and cement creek, contrary to a trusted source, so I hope I find something suitable at cement or the site she recommended, Almont CG, just south of town on 135. - EsoxLuciusExplorerCement Creek USFS campground is off CO 135 as you go north towards Crested Butte. Turn right on Forest Road 740. Only about 15 miles from Crested Butte.
- EsoxLuciusExplorerTake CO 135 north out of Gunnison and watch for County Road 730 on the left. That will take you past The Castles and up into the Gunnison National Forest. Turn right on County Road 12 or Kebler Pass Road which takes you into Crested Butte. Forest Road 826 will take you into the Lake Irwin USFS campground at 10,000 feet. There are also boondocking possibilities in that area of the Gunnison National Forest. http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5190638.pdf
The Castles - HeisenbergExplorerTry this NFS campground. There are plenty in this area.
