Durango campground?

We're planning on spending a week in Durango in August on our way to Denver. I'd like to do some fly fishing. The Durango North/Riverside KOA looks like it's right on the Animas. It would be great to fish from the campground. Has anyone stayed there, done that? Other suggestions are certainly welcome.

I love Ouray. We were there last year but the water was very low and gray from ash runoff. I'm pulling a 36' fifth wheel so I'll pass on that pass. Haven't been to Durango for 3 or 4 years.
Plus I think the fishing may be better on the Animas vs. the Uncompahgre.
  • For those who have been there, can the river front back-in spaces accommodate a 36' fifth wheel with 3 slides? The campground isn't open until May 1 so I can't ask them. The photo on the website shows what appears to be a low tree branch so I'm a bit concerned. I'd love to have the river out my back window.
  • We have stayed at the old KOA north a couple of time. Last time 3 years ago. Nice campground and they have cabins adjacent the river plus access to the river if you are in a camper.

Not meaning to get off topic but have you looked Here in Ouray - On the River and it's hard to Beat OURAY

Just a couple hours North on RT 550 or RT 145 - the San Juan's are just Beautiful - Ouray and Silverton are in the Heart of some of the most beautiful Mountains in Colorado.

    JMHO,
  • Another vote for Alpine Rose. Nice place, fishing close.
  • We stayed at Alpin Rose RV par just north of Durango.

    Nice facilities
