Durango, CO or Maggie Valley NC?
Looking to get out of the Texas heat and humidity for a week or two in early August. Any ideas as to whether Durango or Maggie Valley might be best? Restaurants, things to do, etc.

NC will not accomplish this though may be a little bit nicer than Texas - but not by much.
Durango will meet your requirements.
To put it in other words, go to Durango, when it starts getting to cold, head to Maggie Valley and if you are lucky enough, it may have cooled off enough to be enjoyable.
