Durango or Jackson Hole ?

We want to go back to some cooler weather.
I for some reason other than it popped into my head , want to go to the Jackson Hole area around 8-11 till maybe the 18th or 19th. On the Internet haven't found any open sites so found Durango one of the cooler spots in the nation. Lots of spaces . Any other places to just hang out & enjoy the view.

There's a large fire going on now along the entrance road...not a good recommendation.

The Jackson area also has a couple fires - on at Dubois on 26/287 and another at Bondurant on 189/191.

Durango or Montrose don't have fires. Both of these towns will be hot.

I'd suggest going up to Taylor Park north on Gunnison and NE of Almont for some very cool temps. On the way to Taylor Park and quite a few forest service campgrounds along the river. At Taylor Park is a very nice forest service with electric and non-electric sites. There's also a lot of boondocking up there. This isn't too far for a day trip to Crested Butte - a neat community.

Lake City would be another cool suggestion.
  • If you are in Pagosa Springs area you might consider going over to Bayfield, turn north to the Vallecito Lake area and go on up almost to the Wilderness Area boundary and stay at Blue Spruce RV Park. We spent four days there a couple of weeks ago and had to use heat in the mornings.

The only thing, don't go without reservations. They stay pretty full. Call ahead before making that long drive from Bayfield.

As for Gunnison, there are several good campgrounds there. In recent years we have been staying at Tall Texan on the road up to Crested Butte. And there is a relatively new park in Crested Butte--expensive and no sewer and no dumping station. It is a great place to stay even with those limitations.
  • Seems like you should be able to simply show up around mid-day at Colter Bay or Gros Ventre. I just did that this past weekend; Colter Bay CG had about 50 sites open when I arrived at around 1 pm Sunday.

Cedar Breaks Natl Monument is cool, and night sky should be pretty dark.
  • We've stayed at the Virginian in Jackson a few times. It is centrally located near the center of town. The Virginian RV park is a gravel full hookup parking lot behind the small hotel. Guests have access to the pool, laundry, etc. Very friendly camp host. I'm sure we will go back again.

My mistake, I really meant Gunnison, Co :o
We were in Pagosa Springs a week ago & were in Chama, NM middle of June.
It is 102 here today and I broke down & worked both Tuesday & Friday for the guy that bought my AC service business as they were covered up..
We want to be camping in a cool place with dark nights around the 11th thru 13th as a good meteor. Shower is occurring.

Turquoise Lake would fit the bill - just out side Leadville.

Dark night away from light. Might need to run the A/C backward (heat pump) with the cold nights.

    BOL,

My cool down spot is Leadville, CO - at 10,000 feet it is pretty nice - looked at the weather there earlier today and he High of 72 and a low of 48 sure fits the bill.

If you need to be a little warmer roll down the hill to Buena Vista and the Collegiates, there you can go up or down to get warmer or cooler.

Twin Lakes and Rt 82/Independence Pass to Marron bells in the car is a great diversion for a day. Add to that Crested Butte - or Quincy's for Dinner and K's for lunch. Hard not to want to be there about's.

    JMHO,

  • If you are looking for cooler temps, try someplace a bit higher in elevation. Lots available in NM and CO.

  • We have stayed several times at Henry's Lake State Park, ID, about 15 miles south of West Yellowstone. Nice lake, nice views, close enough to town to find a cafe or a dime store, etc.
Another place we like (days are hotter there, but night cool off) is Buffalo Bill State Park, about 7 miles west of Cody, WY, on the reservoir.
