Durango/Silverton Train

Are reservations really necessary? Going mid Sept. and not sure what date we'll be passing through. May not know until the day before.
  • Be sure to take the bus up and the train back. Search this Forum to find out why.

If you go, please ask all of your fellow passengers to refrain from throwing mustard into the river. It's causing an ugly problem.

    Not funny. :(

Thought it was the other way around to avoid afternoon T-storms in the fall.
  • If you are retired military, they offer a military discount. We were there two years ago in July. They were running three trains to Silverton. Glad we made reservations. The trip is fantastic! Although it was July, we needed jackets in Silverton.
  • Thanks everyone! I'll be making reservations, now have to decide bus/train or train/bus.

Just wanted to comment about an observation I made when I went. While on the phone I asked if I wanted to ride in an open air gondola car. I knew it would be cold, but the gal on the phone recommended it.

Well, what happened was the gondola car was not totally full and while none of the guests from the frozen car moved inside, others inside moved outside to take up the empty seats.

Now, having said the above, be warned that we ended up smelling like a fireplace with all the soot from the engine.

    Hope you enjoy your trip.
  • A couple of suggestions. Go with the gondola car. You can walk the train, but the gondola will give you the best views.

Bring along tight fitting glasses, the cinders can be irritating.

    Have a good trip.
  • Definitely take the train up and the bus back. Mountains have afternoon showers.
