Eastern Sierra campgrounds

Friends (with a van camper) want to camp around Mammoth or Bishop around the first week in June; main campground criteria are 'running water', i.e., campground is on a creek, partly-shaded sites, and *reservable*. I've boondocked extensively along 395 on the east side, but my *campground* experiences are limited.

Suggestions welcome!

  • Devils Postpile NM, outside of Mammoth has a nice campground, as well as 7 NF campgrounds down by the NM. I've camped at the NM and at Red's Meadow, and would recommend both.

I would imagine they are open by early June. They don't take reservations, but I have never not found a site.

We worth the hike to the Postpile (to the top too!) and to Rainbow Falls
  • By the way, it was mosquitoes. The high elevation slows them down but does not stop them.
  • Ended up with reservations for Crags in late July; friends balked at the 8900' elevation at Coldwater and didn't like earlier date choices.

Thanks again to all who replied!
  • Coldwater is the one I picked; thanks for the 'choice validation'! :B And the advice aboout bugs; mosquitoes? No-see-ums?
  • We like Coldwater Campground in Mammoth -- it fits the bill perfectly. Great fishing and hiking in the area. Bring bug juice at that time of year.
  • When we had our TT, over the summer months, we would spend several weeks (one at a time) at Twin lakes in Mammoth. Beautiful little campground at about 9000 feet with two small lakes to fish from. Lots of good hiking trails and very nice camp sites....some reservable and some first come first serve. Campground is just a few minutes from down town Mammoth that has lots of good restaurants and grocery stores.

    Highly recommend it.
