Eureka, CO

Someone in another thread said that the camping in Eureka area n. of Silverton had been turned into a "fee" area. Anyone been up there this year and have any additional information? This area is one of our favorite boondocking areas and we had planned to camp there mid-August.

  • Yes, to answer the question there is a $10.00 fee, they have a little store there. Weather was very cool, fireworks went off with out a hitch, still no open fires or charcoal fires as of yet.
  • A friend of mine found this out last year , the hard way. has anyone tried Gunnison ,mirror lake . I had a man tell me that it was good place to ride ohv We are taking 4 grandkids to Silverton this year know I am looking for different places . I don't mind paying but I want some services for my money.

  • Yep, the only real obstacle in the San Juans and they are going to do a bypass for the stockers and ATVs. It's well needed, a guy was hurt very badly there last year on an ATV and folks are making their own illegal bypasses.

3 cheers for the FS/BLM for stepping up and doing work on the trail.
  • One more Note for the area. The PoughKeepsie 4x4 trail is scheduled to be closed in order to add a By-Pass around 'The Wall' Obstacle area. Don't know if/when work has started yet. The Silverton Tourist office knows nothing.
  • Yep, it's "only" $10 but after it being free for so long it's sad.
  • Woe is me!

Just got off the phone with BLM that referred me to the town of Silverton and here are the facts...

BLM and Silverton did a land swap of some sort last year and the old Eureka townsite is now managed by the town. There are 40 primitive spaces plus overflow, pit toilets, non-potable water, store, campground host, and you get to pay $10 "per unit".

For official info call the town at... (970)387-5654

I won't be staying there again... woe is me!
