Favorite Vacation Location east of Mississippi River

We are planning this year's vacation. We don't have enough time to head west. We wonder what RV.net readers think is their favorite destination east of the Mississippi River where there is plenty of hiking, possibly biking but not necessary if in the mountains, and beauty. We love Acadia, Myrtle Beach, UP of Michigan, Smokeys, but wonder are we missing someplace that we have not thought about? We plan to go after Labor Day.
  • X2 on Watkins Glen. Also Finger Lakes and Letchworth SP
  • check out Watkins Glen State Park in upstate New York. we went there this year and the hiking in the glen was incredible, we hike an average of 100 miles during the camping season and in the past years this was the best. there is so much to see there, also close by is Buttermilk Falls, Robert Tremain State Parks and several others. if you like to hike and enjoy water falls this is the place. we spent 7 days there and I want to go back this year too! and yes there are good places to ride bikes.

My favorite is ELKMONT in the Smoky Mtn Napl Park. As said above it does not have hookups but has restrooms and water available on site. Plenty of hiking trails an nature things to do there.

Just outside Natl Park entrance on the TOWNSEND side to the park is real nice full service camp with creekside camping..

Being in Townsend is great as it is close enough to do the Pigeon Forge an Gatlinburg sites and sounds yet far enough away from it all to enjoy your own peace an quiet.

Another great camping experience is the NORTH GEORGIA National Forest area... Lots of great get-away mtn areas there as well... Our favorite in CLOUDLAND CANYON up on the Lookout mountain off I59 at Trenton GA... East of there is Helen GA which is another Gatlinburg type camping experience... SOuth of there is Desota State Park up on the Lookout Mtn off I59 at Fort Payne, ALA..

For us the high county of VA-TN-NC-SC-GA-AL is our cup of tea... Haven't been to all the good back woods places in NC Natl Forest high country yet - on my bucket list. If we are allowed to run our 2KW Generator just three hours aday with our OFF-ROAD setup will give us a good 12-14 days out in the woods running off our batteries. We have all the comforts of home...

  • GSMNP--the Smokies and Elkmont CG if you can do without full hookups.
  • x 2---Grandfather Mountain was wonderful.
We did Shenandoah NP and the Blue Ridge Parkway on the way to GM (we are from MD)last year and will do again in the future.
Natural Bridge VA is not to be missed, absolutely wonderful---stay for the night light show.Lots of quirky stuff in that area.
So much to see and do.
Also if you have not been --- The New River Gorge.
    Happy travels
