You are definitely not going to be limited in where you go with your 40'. No, you won't fit in every one but neither will a 30'. You will, however, have plenty of excellent choices.
We've stay in national parks, state parks and national forest campgrounds and also Corp of Engineers, county and city parks. We've boondocked a lot miles from pavement. We stayed in only one private park on our all-summer trip to Alaska. The rest were public parks or boondocking in gorgeous areas.
We've stayed in Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, the Sawtooths, Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon and Canyonlands. Also, Rocky Mtn. Big Bend and many, many others.
In Oregon we've stayed at Beverly Beach, Bullards Beach, Cape Blanco, Carl Washburne, Fort Stevens and Harris Beach state parks.
In Arizona we've stayed in every single state park.
I could go on and on. You won't have a problem but you'll have to do your research. Don't believe the written word of site size. That's the beauty of a motorhome. Drive to the area; disconnect your vehicle and drive it in to scout the sites.
Also, we rarely made reservations with any of the above-mentioned parks.
