Parrots in state/federal campgrounds?

I was a park were a camper had 2 parrots. The screeched from morning to night. The CG owner had to ask them to leave.

I just spotted this thread. I travel with my Goffin's Cockatoo. I have yet to go to federal parks, but have stayed in various state parks with no issue.

For security reasons, when we leave, the windows are never left open, so the air is on. And since we are bit of night owls, we keep the windows closed until we go to bed as a courtesy to our neighbors as the bird has the occasional night shriek!

Parrots fall under 'Domestic Exotic' pets. There are permits and all that jazz involved. We have yet to travel into Canada, and Alaska. My understanding that taking an exotic over the borders is a big to-do, and one must be completely prepared.

We've traveled for years with 3 parrots (one a Macaw) in state & Fed Parks in addition to some commercial parks and never had a question or a problem with the birds. On occasion the Macaw & the dog (standard poodle) will get into a shouting match and everyone within 100 yds will have to cover their ears. Noone's complained though.....

I've been working on getting my ducks in a row for my traveling venture next year, leaving finding out about the birds for later. I have six cockatiels. They're quiet in the mornings and evenings--noisy when I'm moving around them but not too noisy like big parrots. My plans include using my senior pass for the parks. Sounds as though I need to get some serious information.

I've seen parrots in both COE and State Park CGs. We haven't been to any Federal CGs yet. In two CGs the parrots were outside in their cages and one place, Buttonwood, a private CG in PA, the parrot was in the window in it's cage. You would be better off calling the places you would like to stay at and ask. The only problem I can foresee is keeping them quiet. Parrots can screech and scream and be more annoying that a yapping dog. If someone complains you may be asked to leave.

I had 2parrots once -- an Eclectus and a African Grey. They didn't screech & squawk as much as TALK. OMG! They never.shut.up.

Funniest thing though was once I was out in the bird room & they were trying to out talk each other to get my attention. Finally the Eclectus hangs on his cage side next to the Greys cage & says "Shut up Mickey" directly to the Grey. (He'd heard me say it often enough--LOL) first & only time I ever heard him say that.

Eycom, my birds aren't quite as bad as the one you had the misfortune of camping next to. By nature, birds are noisy early in the morning and late in the afternoon (calling their flock together), and that can be managed by covering their cage. I managed to keep a macaw and a cockatoo in a (ABOLUTELY NO PETS!) motel room in Sedalia Missouri for almost 2 weeks before they realized they were there...on the last day of our stay, thank goodness! Looks like we may have to either leave the birds at home or stay at private CGs...or boondock waaaay away from other campers!

That's closer to the truth than one realizes. 'Bout 8 years ago, I attended one of those mandatory boring work conference in Louisville, KY and the closest available campsite was at a park in Corydon, IN. Was assigned a site for three days next to a TT owned by a young construction worker with a beautiful blue and gold macaw, named 'Rascal'. Rascal didn't like to be left alone. So, Friday morning when the young man left for work at 5:30 am, Rascal raised hell until I left for the conference at 8:30. When I arrived back at the CG, the young man was home and Rascal was as quiet as a church mouse. Then the young man ran out of cigarettes and needed to run to the store. As he drove off, I would have sworn someone died. OMG... the wailing!!!

But, the worst part was the long day I put in at the conference on Saturday. I couldn't wait to get out of there, get back to the camper and relax. Ah... heaven awaits. Only, Don Juan has a date and drives off as I'm getting ready to sit outside and relax with my adult beverage. That dang bird wailed, screeched, squawked, bit@#%^, p!$$ed, and moaned until 12:30 am when my neighbor finally returned. If I never camp next to a parrot again, it'll be too soon.:B
