As a newbie and preparing to buy my first RV this is a subject that has caused much confusion and consternation. DW and I plan to retire soon and have been looking forward to a few years of touring the US and Canada with a focus on State and national parks. We started out looking at class A's narrowing the size to under 35 ft, mainly because of all the reading we did about problems with fitting in sites in the places we want to go to. I made a move toward buying a TT or 5er to two behind my truck so we could eliminate the need to pull a toad. My wife is saying now the most state and federal parks now restrict RV to a combined length of 30 ft or less. Most trucks and vans capable of towing are 16 to 18 ft in length. Add a hitch and the front of a TT and you are at about 20-22 ft. That leaves you 8-10Ft for the box, by may calculation.
I know there are a few micro trailers that may meet this but very few. Most of the industry builds TT at 20-35 ft and 5ers at 26-45 feet. MH, except for maybe some Class B and C are over 30 ft. Can the industry be this out of sync with may desirable CS? Are we misinterpreting the requirements. At this point I would like to buy a TT in the 24-28 ft range or a 5er in the 26-30 ft range. by my estimate this means a combined rig of 42 to 44 ft. I would call the a medium RV, but according to what I have read this would limit me to camping in less than 50% of public camp grounds. Help me out here, am I calculating this wrong?
