This is nothing new. I remember 40yrs ago as a kid, my Dad would drive the camper up to Port Cresent State Park on Wednesday and then drive home to work Thursday and Friday, so we would get the weekend.
Then they made a rule that you must have someone in the camper, so my Mom would stay.
With electronic reservations, this is just the next step. Not sure if Mich DNR closed the loophole but if you only need 1 week, you could book 2 weeks 6 months & 1 week out and then cancel the first week. Otherwise, you have to wait until 6 months out and then you are fighting for spots with everyone else.
