Finding water while boon docking

Our hardest problem in boondocking is finding water. Our set up has 50 gallons of water and we can live probably 10 days on that. We have typically done a campground when we need to dump/get water...mostly for the water part. Dumping is not necessarily and issue; we can usually find that for free or priced reasonably. Water is the issue especially for 50 gallons for 30 gals or whatever we need....without doing the campground thing.

Currently we are heading into Newfoundland and some of the provincial parks say you should boil the water. That is not happening. I live on water and lots of veggies so I need clean water.

My husband is not above asking someone working in their yard if we can have some water but I have not gone there.

  • I have not hesitated to ask a farmer if I could pay a few bucks to fill up my FW tank from his hose, assuming the water was potable. However, I live in Texas, so things might be different.

I have also bought a bunch of five gallon water containers, put them as best as I could between the rear axles of my TT on the floor of my camper, which luckily was where the dinette is, so I just shoved them underneath that on a rubber mat, and they stayed put.

I'm not sure what your rig is, but for me, additional water isn't too tough. I just toss containers into my truck's bed or in my rig. When moving to a motorhome, I'm considering an open-frame trailer as another place to put additional things like water containers, fuel cans, and so on.
  • Thanks I will be more of a sleuth. I do bring 8-10 gallons of drinking water.

I guess "finding water" under the boon docking section was not a good enough key word...lol!
  • We bring five extra six gallon plastic jugs -- so we have 60 gal. in total -- 30 in the trailer, 30 in the jugs. Ranger stations often have water, if you ask very nicely and maybe buy a map, too!
