First hand update on Hunting Island, SC campground

Just got back from a day trip for a look see. Awful! I am sure a lot of work has been done but there is still a lot to do. The wooded side is open but there are large pools of water all around with flooding in the roads. They did have a large rain storm yesterday. The wooded side does now have 50 amps. The beach side (88 sites) are no longer. Our favorite sites are now trashed, no trees, branches and debris lying all around. We did find out that they kept 2 of the 3 bath houses. They are boarded up. It is a possibility that, in the future, they may set up some camp sites on the beach side and reopen the two bath houses. Another possibility is that they may expand the campground into the wooded area behind the Rangers house. It appears that now, they need to do a lot more cleanup on the beach side and bring in beach sand for a better appeal. We also found out that a beach re-nourishment is suppose to take place this winter. Hopefully it will be enough to replace the dunes that were washed away. The beach front campsites are all gone. If anyone wants anymore info, just pm me.

  • Makes me sad, too, but so grateful for the winter visits we had a chance to make a few times in our class B, camping at the edge of the beach in that first row looking toward the Atlantic. Special memories.
  • This is so sad to hear. It's been a tradition to go to Hunting Island...maybe our favorite campground in all of the country. We may try to get there this fall/winter for a quick stay.

It's emotional for us, as our love for camping was birthed at Hunting Island. We took our boys in a tent when they were 4 and have never stopped camping!

    Thanks for the report.
  • Yep. Here right now. Was that you in a group of four I met on the beach? Been here a week through some intense rain ( raining again as I write this ). First time here in summer. Normally come in fall or winter to avoid heat and humidity along with the mosquito Air Force. Compared to what it was is like night and day. Compared to what it was after the last hurricane is amazing. They run a slide show at the nature center showing the damage. Impressive what Mother Nature did to the place and what has been done so far.

There is water everywhere but too they have had tons of rain in the last two months. And being the low country not many places for it to go. Just when it's all soaked in, here comes another storm and it starts again. We could use a good drought!

We have a reservation back here in November but if the rains continue may divert to Myrtle Beach area. We will come back here as it has always been our favorite spot.

They actually took down two of four bath houses, and pending a final decision on what they will do with the now fallow camping area they may take those too. It's a work in progress.
