First time snowbirding advice

Hi All. Just recently decided to leave the corporate world and retired early. Still have personal business interests but now my time is my own. DW and I are thinking of spending the last three weeks of January in Fl as kind of a trial run for real snowbirding in the future. Plenty of experience with actually living in the FW for extended periods of time

Any hints or advice for Fl at that time of the year? What about reservations, little worried I am too late in making them.
  • Our first snowbirding winter was for 4 weeks after retiring. Then it was 8 weeks. Last year it was 10 weeks. This year looks like 12 weeks. Darn bones just can't seem to take the cold any more. Have fun!
  • From what I have seen, because you will be doing weeks instead of months, there should be no problem as they usually have some spots for transcients. Remember that Jan can be cool so if you like tee shirt and shorts weather, look to go at least as far south as Tampa.
  • Siesta Bay seems expensive to me ..
    High Season
Site Type Daily Weekly Monthly Daily Weekly Monthly Daily Weekly Monthly
    Standard $33 $165 $558 $42 $225 $765 $51 $353 $1,349
  • You might try Siesta Bay in Ft. Myers. They have a great deal for first time visitors.
  • We have been down there the last several years. No reservations. If you go all the way south, you will start to run into "Full" signs, but we were around the I-4 corridor, and ALL the parks we saw and looked at had room. I am sure there are some that are full, but we had no problem at all.
  • Fl is a good choice for snowbirding in Janurary. Please let us know what area of Florida you are looking at. Don't forget southeast Georgia and the panhandle of Florida. There are different budgets for Florida, so keep that in mind. Don't rule out hosting if you're interested in staying in an area where you might not get a reservation. When we are interesting in an area, we call all the parks: private, state, county, city and even private spaces. You would be surprised what's out there. Area?
