If you decide to stay outside the park in West Yellowstone be aware that the park enterence gets backed up each morning. It is best to get a very early start to avoid waiting. You will also be driving quite a ways to see points of interest in the park.
If we were going to visit Ydllowstone again, I would camp in two different places on opposite sides of the park to reduce driving times. It is a very large park.
Yes the entrance can get backed up in the mornings, but the drive into Madison junction (Grand Loop) is just 14 miles and I think there is always some to see along the Madison River. JMHO
