I second Dead Horse SP in Cottonwood. That time of year it can be gorgeous or pretty cold at higher elevations, depending on the weather.

Cottonwood (3400' alt.) is a an hour or a little more to Flagstaff (7000')and Prescott (5200'), 25 minutes to Sedona (4300'), 10 minutes to Jerome (5000') and less than 2 hours to Phoenix (1100').
