Flordia in January?

My wife and I are trying to plan a 2 week vacation after the New Year to visit her mother in Florida, and spend some together. We are looking at some timeshares, playing with flying down & renting a car, or driving down, but were also wondering about bringing our trailer (we love our trailer!!).

How full are campgrounds in Florida in January?? Is it possible to move around a few times (thinking 2-4 days in one place). With the trailer it would take 2 days down and back, and about 12 days in Florida. We will be staying with MIL for 3-4 days. Considering checking our Sarasota and Naples?
  • At this point in time, your best option is to get on the Florida DNR web site and see what's available and get reservations NOW! You should call private campgrounds too and those in NOW. And, it might already be too late.

We've made reservations for Florida (Panama City area) 2 years ago no, ahead about 8 months. We made reservations for Christmas and for a week in March (Panama City area again), and both times, we got the very last spot.

This year, we made reservations for Christmas week (2015) in January 2015. We're going to Florida Caverns, a little farther North than Panama City, but had no problem getting a spot.

What I'm saying is, you need to do your homework right now and get those reservation in NOW, if it's not too late already. You've only got 3 months. (IF) anything is still available.
  • Southern Florida campgrounds can be really crowded in January. You might find some north of Tampa. Personally I would want reservations. Do some searches for available campsites. That's my opinion.
  • We take our camper down every February (except for the 2 years we had new born babies...) and LOVE it. If you are close to the water, its going to be hard to find spots. If you look now you might be able to find some places. Not sure of your age, but there are a lot of 55+ parks that tend to have more vacancies in the winter time.

Either way, have fun. Nothing like getting out of the winter for a little while!!!
