Hi! We are looking to visit the Everglades national park and need to get info on good campgrounds nearby, and about air boat tours also. This would be sometime in Sept

One thing to note about Flamingo CG in Everglades is that it is 50 miles from the entrance. It is a nice spacious CG with electricity but no water at the campsite. I think air boat rides are only offered outside the park.

We have a motorcycle for transportation once we park the RV, i suspect just a day stay at the national park and then a air boat ride and then we would leave to the next stop. Staying outside the park is fine if there is a closer campground

RT 41(?) The road from Miami to Naples used to have a couple of airboat operations about 15 miles out past the casino. The one on the north side has an old native village that they take tourist to, kinda interesting. If you go down to the main area by Homestead be prepared for a mosquito onslaught of the winds are calm.

I will add that September in South Florida has miserable weather.

I for one love the Everglades national park.Some thoughts:(for a quickie one day trip)1. On the northern side if you come in on 41, (The Tamiami Trail), you will pass many air boat ride places. I would pass the ones heading to the northern entrance of the park in Everglades NP and also pass the entrance to the park in Everglades City. You won't see the true Glades there(just Florida Bay and some off shore Keys)2 Continue on 41 until you get to where all the Mikkasukee(sp)Indian air boat ride places are and take one of them on the right hand sideAlong the way there you will pass "Half Way campground" which is National Forest campground and I think is free3. camping outside the park: after those air boat places, continue on 41 until you get to the big Mikkasukee (sp) gambling casino and turn right onto Chrome Ave. This will take you to the southern entrance of the NP. Along the way the RV park we use (but it is off the road), is "Miami Everglades campground" which has all the amenineties that you would want.4. Camping inside the southern section. The southern section is our favorite, and you get to see the true glades. the first NP campground is "Long Pine Key" It is a beautiful campground, but has no hookups. You can get water at spigots and there are rest rooms, (just cold water) At the end of the road at Flamingo there is a large mostly wide open NP camp ground which is where we usually put our base camp and then take off into the wilderness for multi day kayak camping trips on the 99 mile "Wilderness Waterway". If you do go as far as Flamingo; make sure to look from the boat docks for the pair of humongous salt water crocodiles that hang out there. There is a class A only resort - spendy - called Everglades Isle Motorcoach resort and an Outdoor resorts a little south of the city itself. Airboat tours abound - same halfway decent places to eat as well. Have not been there in the early fall so it might be pretty hot and steamy. Was there in early April and was pretty nice - not at all humid and hot.

There are two others in the area, but for much smaller rigs than a pusher.

I went to the Everglades, and took an airboat tour, and loved it. This is an awesome country!

We were in the Miami area last May and again in February for a cruise. We were in a hotel and I can't tell you anything about camping, but we did do an airboat tour both times. We found Cooperstown was really fun and easy. We did a Groupon and got it for $15 per person. I would pay full price for it, but it was a fun hour out on the airboat, which was loud, loud, loud! The bathrooms were pretty nasty both times we were there. They gave us cotton balls for our ears, but if I were going again, I would take some of those 99 cent ear plugs from Walmart.

Bill, unless they've added it since last year, there is no water at the Midway sites, just a common spigot near the dump station.

Midway campground (national park services) on Alligator Alley, close to air boat rides, close to Oasis Visitor Center, thirty miles to Mikusukee Casino (boondocking).

If we camp in FL in the summer time (yes, Sept is still well in the summer), then it must involve either a beach or a pool or both. Of course, when you consider that Sept is a strong hurricane time, it becomes less attractive. I, for one, would not recommend a stay in Flamingo in Sept, especially just for one night. But that's IMHO.

If you want to go, have fun. I just don't think you'll see many Floridians there at the same time...

Take your bug spray as the mosquito population seems to reach its zenith in September. On the bright side you'll miss alligator mating season that's in the Spring and that's when they're very aggressive. One Spring we went fishing in a bass boat that a gator came up an tried to take a bite out of. We carried a large caliber pistol with us after that.

Suprz- Enjoy your trip !

As stated it will be extra hot / humid that time of year! Nothing a nice pool / spring, a couple cold ones, and a good AC can't handle !
