Florida gulf coast campgrounds

Can anyone tell me of any campgrounds that are located directly on the Gulf? I know about Camp Gulf, but it is so expensive. How about somewhere further south?
Any information is appreciated!

No kidding! And if it is cheap, then the clientele may not be law abiding. An inexpensive AND nice campground with a safe camping environment is highly improbable; not impossible but improbable.
  • IIRC Cedar Key has a park in town on the Gulf..
Red Coconut, Ft. Myers Beach might be a lot cheaper in the summer
The Panhandle has a few, Destin, Carrabelle,
Cortez, down around Bradenton has one close to the Gulf.
Some parks in Bradenton are inland, but a straight shot out to the Gulf.

East Coast, Atlantic Ocean Side has a few more. Just not much on the Gulf side.
  • If you want to see the "real" Florida forget about RV resorts in the southern part of the state. The only real thing left down there are the alligators and mosquitoes. Real Florida is along the Gulf Coast from about Crystal River to Pensacola, mid-state from Ocala to Milton, and north Florida from St Augustine to Fernandino Beach. You can camp on rivers with huge white sandbars that rival any beach, explore beautiful springs, drive on canopied roadways, visit quaint little towns, the whole nine yards. Deep in the Everglades is still "real" but hard to get to. lizzie
  • I am thinking about visiting sometime between April thru September. I would only be interested in a few nights before we would move on. We want to visit and see the real Florida.
  • I can tell you that in the Fort Myers area, a really nice RV site (40'x 100') 2 miles off the beach is around $1500 a month. Smaller sites (25' x 75') at decent RV parks 2 miles off the beach are closer to $1200 a month. If you want to be 7 or 8 miles from the beaches it starts getting cheaper.
  • There is one called red coconut on Ft Meyers beach. Don't know if you'll find any openings till spring. I've heard it's pretty pricey.

Want to stay right on the sand of the beach, further south?

Try this one: On The Beach
