We live in a 55+ golf course community in central FL that has lakes, ponds, canals, and lots of natural wetlands/marshes. We actually take our Grandson out every Saturday on the golf cart to find alligators and turtles. There are alligators everywhere. As stated, if you're smart about it and take your dog on a short leash, you'll be fine. I'd rather see an alligator than a snake. Snakes give me the creeps.
If your in a rattlesnakes space he will bite you-no doubt. An alligator will run the other way in almost all cases.
