Florida State Forests (not parks)

Some of you looking for a place to camp in Florida may be interested in the State Forests: CG

There are many more FSF than the three mentioned in the article, including Tate's Hell State Forest. Just think you could camp there and then tell everyone that you camped in Hell...heh. CG List

These forests are not heavily used, you might find a place when everything else is full.

We have stayed at Sand Pond Recreation Area in Pine Log State Forest near Elbro. A very nice small campground on a fishing pond. It has 20 sites with electric hookups. An added bonus is the half-price fee for seniors.

We found it on The Ultimate Public Campground Project website.

Thanks for sharing! This looks very helpful.

Go to UScampgrounds.info, and you can see a map of all the publicly owned campgrounds--federal, state, local.

As of two-three years ago, I was reading stuff here or somewhere saying that those forests were having problems with meth labs and unsavory illegal permanent campers.

    Has that changed?

The Ocala National Forest had a problem with the 'Rainbow Tribe' but that was more than a decade ago. We inadvertently drove up to one of their camps and got plenty of hostile stares and gestures. The CG was a real mess. But I haven't heard of other incidents, which doesn't mean that they aren't there.

  • Tate's Hell doesn't ban RV's and there are some beautiful spots with plenty of space for them. Access may be challenging for those who are unfamiliar with the roads though. Best to get information for a local. lizzie
  • Of the dozen or so I checked, most said "No RV's", and the others were primitive sites. Do you know of any with at least electric for RV's?
