You could always "follow the blossoms". Time the trip north to follow trees blossoming in different areas: just do an online search for blossom festivals for approximate times.

Western NC is beautiful in May, so is Eastern TN.
Shenandoah Valley in VA.
Or a northwest route to Arkansas via Alabama/MS is nice. OR go to MO via AL & E.TN
