For Those With Only Summer To Travel

We do the majority of our rving June to August when our grandson is out of school so he can take a long trip with us. Any of you follow the same pattern? If so where are you planning to go next summer? We've been to every state in lower 48 (Canada twice) so we're looking for places we haven't been yet that a 12 yr old boy would appreciate. This summer we went to Yellowstone (3rd time) and the boy wants to go back next summer but I told him we could come up with somewhere new so I ask for your opinions.

  • How about the west coast. There is a lot to do & see...disneyland, Lego land, sea world, San Diego zoo & the Ocean. Maybe a baseball game too. California has a lot to offer besides just the obvious.
  • Yes, I do not mean to downplay Yellowstone at all. It is nearly as large as the state of South Carolina. We spent a week there in September 2011 and drove every road at least once - so diversified and so much to do and see.

I cannot, though, imagine being there in the summer with the crowds! :-)

We lived in Estes Park, CO 1995-2003 and love Rocky Mtn NP and there is so much all thru Colorado.

And Glacier is outstanding as well.

We were to Mt. Rushmore this last summer - should do Custer SP and the Badlands as well to make this worthwhile - Rushmore is only a day in itself. I would certainly pick CO as the route though.

I like this idea. Maybe hike a trail or different trail. Research about that particular trail so you can build the excitement. Maybe fcn rent a boat & go fishing on Yellowstone Lake.

What's he like about Yellowstone? The Mountains, wildlife, etc? It may be he would enjoy another play similar to Yellowstone.
  • Since you have been to every state it is hard to suggest anything IMHO.

If you had an area you want to focus on and tell us his / your interests we might be able to more clearly zero in and help you. If he likes Yellowstone you probably are looking for natural beauty with maybe a little commercial stuff tossed in.

We have traveled the 11 western states and 2 western provinces extensively for 15 years (part time) and there are places we have gone back to repeatedly and others were a "been there done that".

Even when raising our family and tent camping we were more into natural beauty - lots of it out here in the "West". We hiked - did National / State parks, etc.
  • Personally, having been a 12 year old boy at one time, I would think AMUSEMENT PARKS!!!!!!!!!

Hershey is about 600 miles from you
Dollywood about 160, Both, round trip 1300.

But according to the DW I still act like a 12 yr old anyway!
  • I'd vote for Mt. Rushmore and also Grand Tetons!

Both "doable" from a Yellowstone trip!
  • If he enjoyed Yellowstone take him back but then take him to different places to give him the experiece's that will last forever.
