A number of interesting forts in Washington and Oregon..
Ft Worden and Ft. Stevens are a couple of them. Both heavy gun emplacements - bunkers that guarded the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the mouth of the Columbia River.
Good state parks and camping at both.
I worked with an architect in the summer of 1970 that was hired by the WA State Parks, and the WA State Arts Commission to help design Fort Worden for public use as a cultural center. We spent the summer in Port Townsend and got to intimately experience the facility. We had the original linen drawings, and verified the construction and condition of the Fort, and investigated future uses. It is an amazing place that we saw great potential for.
It, together with Fort Casey and Fort Flagler, have an amazing history of "misuse" of funds that would make Halliburton blanch. The Spanish fleet attacking Puget Sound?
