You could spend a couple of days in the Champlain Valley of NY/VT and the Connecticut River Valley of VT/NH and see some pretty cool places Fort wise. I would start by reading:
A: War on the Run: The Epic Story of Robert Rogers and the Conquest of America's First Frontier
B: White Devil: A True Story of War, Savagery, and Vengeance in Colonial America
C: Last of the Mohicans (OK Daniel Day-Lewis film version would be good too)
To truly get the scope of these battles you should have an understanding of Lake George and Champlain and how big they are. To imagine his men rowing from the southern end of Lake George, carrying these 30 man boats over Mt. Defiance, rowing them 100 miles to Canada to include going through Mallets Bay and over the sand bar to avoid French Frigates is pretty wild.
Whitehall, NY has some cool US Navy/Revolutionary War stuff and Plattsburgh has some cool Revolutionary War stuff as well with Benedict Arnold (before being a traitor) fighting the British Navy at the Battle of Valcour Island.
Start out on Lake George in NY. There are several campgrounds that are history related. Lots to see and do. Ft. Ticonderoga, Fort Defiance, and across the lake Mount Independence in VT. Move north about 10 miles to a NY State Park at Crown Point Historic Site where there are remnants of 2 Forts.
Now mind you it would be pretty easy to get distracted around Shelbourne Village, which I highly recommend btw, but you want to continue to Charlestown, NH (the birthplace of Carlton Fisk- Go Sox!) to The Fort at Number 4. (1-3 are simply memories) This was the end point for Rogers and his men after the raid into Canada but has a very cool history all of it's own. There are several private and VT state CGs in the area to stay at.
Kittery, ME and New Castle, NH have several newer Forts of WW1 and WW2 era that are impressive also.
