Ft Wilderness, need bikes??

I should preface this that this is our first trip to the Fort, but we've been to Disney once before.

We are doing a short stay at Ft Wilderness next week, and are debating taking our bikes. We will arrive on Sunday, and have rented a golf cart for that day to explore the campground etc, we do not have park passes for that day. We will be doing the parks on Mon, and Tues, and leaving on Wed. Is it work the hassle to load the bikes for the 2 days we will be in the parks?

Our thought is that the only time in the campground on Mon and Tue would just be going to the parks and back.

Thanks for any advice.
  • I wouldn't bring the bikes if you will be spending the non-golf cart days in the parks. The bus stops are convenient to the loops, and they'll take you to the Settlement for dining and the boat to Magic Kingdom, or the Outpost to pick up the buses to the other parks and Disney Springs. I don't think you'll have a need for the bikes, nor the time to ride if you want to.

Thanks for the quick reply. That was my thought too, but I keep reading about how handy a bike or golf cart was. We are already taking 4 kayaks to paddle Crystal River and Rainbow River the second part of the week.

I think the bikes will stay home this week.

Good choice. If you were spending a lot of time just in the campground, they'd be fun. With what you are planning, I think you'll be glad you left them home.
  • We took our bikes because we didn't want to spend the same amount for a golf cart for the day as the site. But we are bikers and think nothing of riding 10 miles. We rode our bikes to the dock where we picked up the tour boat to Epcot.

We ride regularly, so the distance isn't a problem, but the loading, unloading with 4 kayaks on a rack above them is a pain. Also securing 4 upper end bikes adds to the hassle. The kids think golf carts a fun, so that will be a treat for them.

So not to confuse others that have never been to Fort Wilderness, the boat doesn't got to Epcot, only the Magic Kingdom. You can eventually get to Epcot by hopping a few buses, but there's no direct boat ride to Epcot. To get to Epcot or the other parks, pick up a bus at the Outpost (where you check-in).

We always bring our bikes when we are at the Fort, but we generally don't go to the parks when we go to Disney (usually once every 5 years or so we go to the parks). So we use our bikes all the time.

With a golf cart, the bikes would not be necessary. There's a lot more parking for golf carts at Fort Wilderness than bike parking. You can go almost everywhere in a golf cart that you can with a bike.
