FYI Regarding SC SP

Just FYI. I tried to make a reservation on-line for Lake Wateree State Park, SC. The on-line site would not allow me to make one for 1 night only. Had to be a minimum of 2 nights. This is for May 12th, so not a holiday weekend.

I called the park. Apparently this is their new policy. You can call the park the week you need 1 night and get it that way -- if they have one available. Just something I had not run into yet.
  • Also true as long as I can recall for the very popular Hunting Island SP in SC.

Nothing bad about staying there for two nights, except having to pack up and leave.
  • That's a common trick used for popular parks. Say you want to spend a week at a very popular campground. You are allowed to stay 3 weeks, you only want one. Book a site 2 weeks prior to plus the week you want (book all three weeks) when the booking window opens (some are 6 months, some 9, whatever). This way you have your campsite 2 weeks earlier than anyone else would. A couple of weeks later, when you're within date, cancel the first 2 weeks. You pay a penalty, but have the site of your choice.
Fair, no. Ethical, no. Happening frequently, YES! Sad but true.

According to their FAQ's page, if you cancel 15+ nights out, then you are charged a $10 handling fee. 4-14 Days out, then one night fee, 0-3 days out, the entire deposit.

    So, it's gonna cost you....
