Georgia Antebellum Suggestions?

Somewhat surprised that a search did not turn up much in terms of posts focused on this. Surely there are some die-hard antebellum folks out there!

I found the guide to the Antebellum Trail, but was interested in any input from locals of the best area to focus on if I don't have much time.

I thought I would make a detour through this area on my way from Myrtle Beach to the Pensacola area and just want to stop for a couple of days to soak in some sights. I'm a working full-timer so I can't just leisurely do the whole trail.

It looks like I can come across on I-20 and then drop down to either Eatonton or Milledgeville. Seems both have RV parks. Anyone have any thoughts on which would be more scenic to stop for a couple of days?

  • If you go I-20 towards Augusta, don't forget to stop in Harlem, GA. The hometown of Oliver Hardy. We were pleasantly surprised at all the Laurel and Hardy items and DVD's in the small Museum. They even let you watch some of the old movies for free.

Born and raised there, and second this recommendation. Find out more at this link. There's some really nice shopping, as well as some great historic places to visit.

For plantations, Pebble Hill is well worth a stop: Link

The Lapham-Patterson house is not a plantation home, but instead is a "winter cottage:" Link

    Happy camping!
  • Swing through Madison, GA if you go your posted route. Story has it that Sherman had a friend that he had visited in Madison but could not remember exactly which mansion he lived it so he ordered his troops to skip Madison and not burn any of the homes there. There a a few grand old places there and the downtown area is really a treat.

  • Antebellum Georgia is "Gone With The Wind". Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Seriously Sherman burned most of it. Not a lot of good examples left and most are not what folks picture in their mind. The real plantation south was mostly smaller working farms that were self sufficient. Savannah still has some great old buildings and there are a few scattered towns with good classic pre war architecture.
  • Personally, I like taking GA 44 from I-20 down to Eatonton. Mostly 2 lane, but takes you through the lakeside community of Oconee. A pretty drive. While I've camped in Milledgeville, it's been 8 or 9 years and I don't recall the park. My last couple of visits to the area, I stayed in the NF campground on Lake Sinclair about 15 miles south of Eatonton off Hwy 129 near GA 212. The campground is centrally located between Eatonton and Millidgeville and served as a base from which to work. There are many tent sites on the lake and only 7 or 8 W/E sites which are a couple of blocks off of the water. The bathrooms weren't up to snuff, so I used my own. It's quiet and with the "geezer" pass, the price is right. Be sure to stock the fridge. It's a haul to the grocery store.
