You could also plan your trip to coincide with the reenactment battles held there. Want to see history. You could watch it almost live.

Take a tour. Let the guides drive and explain what you are looking at. Much more informative than going it alone.
You could also search this Forum in the RV Parks section for `Gettysburg' and read on.

There is a nice 12 mile loop hike around the Gettysburg battlefield. There is also a neat pottery place right near the battlefield (the name escapes me now). There is antiquing in New Oxford about 20 miles east. And you can hike the Appalachian Trail about 20 miles west of Gettysburg. I have stayed at Roundtop and Drummer Boy campgrounds in Gettysburg, both of which I would recommend.

I Second Gettysburg Campground. Was clean and well run. Was just there with my wife and two girls (16 and 21) in June. The cyclorama was their favorite part. I really enjoyed Devils Den and Little Round Top. there are a few wineries to visit, a distillery soon, a cidery, and some nice places to eat. Wrote it up on my blog @ Central PA RoadTrip
Thinking of do a guys trip there this summer - my girls are just not civil war buffs.

As far as campgrounds I would recommend Gettysburg Campground

Oh My!!! Start at the visitor center. Get a feel for the battlefield. Also go to see the electric map, it gives you a good idea of how the battle progressed. You can take tours or get the self guided tour using a CD. Then you can get out and explore as you want. If the weather is nice (hard in winter) lots of bike riding opportunities through the park. You are also close to the Maryland line and there are lots of things to see there. Lots of shops. Also you are not that far from Lancaster you can take a day trip there. We used to go several times a year and always found and learned something new. You can also do a horseback ride through the battlefield. I can go on and on. It is a great place. Have fun.
