Blackhills are our favorite. Also Minnesota has some beautiful small towns.
US 212 from Crow Agency to Sturgis is the longest stretch of nothing we have found in the US. It is an incredible drive (just make sure you have everything filled up before starting it is 260 or so miles before you hit the next gas station!)
