As to driving or taking the bus or shuttles, it all depends on your comfort level. I've driven the road many times over the years, and love it. I can't stand riding rather than driving, so I prefer taking my own vehicle. I like to be able to stop & take photographs when I choose, rather than when the driver does. For those that don't like tight, curving roads, the bus or shuttle might be a better idea. You have to pay for the red "Jammers", but with the right driver, are a great trip.
