When our daughter went to college in D.C., we stayed at Little Bennett Regional Park in Clarksburg, MD. Much easier to get to than Cherry Hill and very quiet. An oasis in the middle of chaos. It was inexpensive as well. You could drive a few miles to the train station, Shady Grove, I believe. We actually became familiar enough with D.C., we drove most of the time.
We did camp at Cherry Hill once. They sold us expired tickets for the train which we didn't know till we got there and had to pay again. It was fairly new at that time and was muddy with unlevel sites. I'm sure that's not the case today, as I said, it was just being built.
